hearts and heroes

Because I spoil myself on everything, I was reading "My Hero Academia" fanfic with Overhaul/Chisaki in it long before I read that arc of the manga, and now that I have, I'm baffled by certain ones that wrote him in a positive light. (One AU made him close friends with Izuku, with both of them against the Hero system and I'm just like, uuuh, sure? Dunno how that pans with Izuku's character, but go for it.)
I mean, I get it. We all have our villains we love and want to see living happy lives not being horrific child-abusers. People are gonna like what they like. He's just so straightforwardly evil and callous with the lives of others and doesn't even have the interestingly hypocritical philosophy of Stain or Tomura's childishness and attachment to his people. Other than Overhaul being pretty and stylish, I'm not sure where the appeal is.

I'm still bashing my way through Kingdom Hearts III with delight and gusto. The game is getting stronger as it goes on and the humor is, too. KH has always leaned toward the cheesy when it comes to jokes, but the humor in this one derives more from character interactions and Sora being a sass-mouth. It's charming.
Having gone to the Frozen world now, I'm starting to grow fond of SOME of the Organization XII yahoos. Larxene is a profound delight. Marluxia, Demyx, and Larxene hanging out on tall rocks and giving each other shit made all of them significantly more endearing.
Of course, the "Kingdom Hearts is Confusing and Convoluted" hot takes are circulating once more. I'm not gonna pretend it's a simple storyline, but it's not that much more convoluted then other expansive story universes. Sure, there's 17 years of lore built up, but look at Transformers. You can't even talk about Transformers without having to mention the upwards of five different versions of one character. Nevermind trying to break into Western superhero comics.
I think KH gets extra flack because the premise is "Final Fantasy characters hang out with Mickey Mouse" and yes, that is sily. It's audience (or at least, the one often seen loudly celebrating it in Western circles) skews female, so I'm sure that's an element too.
Anyway, it always makes me want to do an essay or video on the plot and events and how to sort it all out.

Yes, that's how I feel about it!
I do think a dedicated writer could find a way to justify the differences -- maybe he had some extensive therapy or at some point realized how awful it was to use people the way he did and worked to change. There are many ways to explain why a villain in canon could become a not-villain in a different setting.
But so far, I haven't found a fic doing that, which is too bad. It's a shame, because characters like Overhaul, that think they know what's best and will trample over everyone else in the process, can be really interesting even in a non-villainous context.
